There is a new ban enacted on a group of airlines, and it has been dubbed as the "Trump Laptop Ban". Simply put, it bans all electronic devices larger than a phone to be on the airplane with you, so you must put them in a check in bag. Now, because this was enacted by Trump, there is a lot of criticism and "unfairness" circling this move.
Many of the liberal news sources immediately jumped to conclusions about this ban. Some were stating that because the ban was only enacted on airlines flying to Middle Eastern countries, known as the Emirates, this would bring more revenue to US airlines, and it was a economical decision that Trump made.
While there are many speculations, there are some simple explanations. There was an incident involving a bomb planted in a laptop that blew a hole in a Somali Jet. While a laptop can hold a explosive device, it would be really difficult to sneak a bomb in a phone through security, and it would be easier to catch it through x-rays. Also, when you have to put your laptop in a checked-in bag, it goes through more extensive screening, and it is more difficult to detonate a bomb wirelessly than with it in person. The airports that have been suspected to have this ban were probably chosen based on TSA's confidence levels in the screening processes.
This is related to the Oregon Trail, when people were trying to improve the safety of the trail, by adding ferries and making cutoffs to shorten the trail.
