Moral Excuse: The Money tree
-The trees had money growing on them instead of cotton, and the cotton bags were money bags. The slaves had only ragged shorts on, and they were working hard, even a little kid was working. The manager had dollar signs for eyes, he was well dressed, smoking a cigar, and he was fat, meaning he had plenty in all areas. His mansion was in the distance, and it was very large, portraying his wealth. The manager was saying that he owned slaves only because they couldn’t help themselves, but in reality he was doing it for the money.
-The manager is exaggerated to be rich, with dollar sign eyes, a suit, and being very fat. The money on the trees and the bags have the dollar symbol on them, showing how much value the slaves were bringing to their masters.
-The difference between the master and his slaves was that they were physically much stronger than him, and he was fat, and how he had very nice clothes and they only had rags.
-The irony is how the master was using the “taking care of them” to cover up the profit he was making, but it was actually very obvious, because of the pile of money next to him.
-The familiar symbols used is the dollar sign, to represent wealth, and how the master was making a lot of money. The other is the cigar that the master is smoking. Rich people are often portrayed with a cigar, and it symbolizes the master’s wealth one again.
